l am going to be a freshman next year and just out of curiosity, what do l need to work on? just so i will be good by the time we have to tryout...
also how long do tryouts last?

Do A lot of running man you will need it!

1 u must have fantastic conditioning, if u can out run & out speed ur competition it is a big plus & will help make up for other parts of ur game that may be lacking.
#2 Work on juggling the ball to maintain good ball control.
#3 Work on ur striking ability, practice free kicks, penalty shots & corners.
Drink lots of water prior & during ur workouts, u will sweat it off if u r working hard.

Obviously make sure ur touch on the ball is good & u have a good knowledge base on the game of soccer. Also, be sure that u r fit & strong--high school is when fitness starts to be a huge issue. At this level most people r competent ball handlers; the ones who stand out r the ones with great speed, endurance, & power. Lastly, make sure u compete. By 'compete' l mean that u have to go after every ball as if it could win or lose the biggest game of ur life, & stay focused throughout try-outs. This will make u really stand out. Good luck!

my son is on a travel team travels all over, they go on to you-tube for soccer drills. they also run for an hour per practise and they work on deeks, dribbling, suicides. tryouts last min of one hour.

First off, in every high school sport teams there r either the junior varsity or the varsity team. And we all know only the best players r put in the varsity team. The junior varsity team usually consists of ur younger & lower class-mens. But sometimes u will have one or two individual (freshmans) who will make it to the varsity team right off the back because of the skills & potentials they possess as outstanding players. As for you, l think that for now u r only concentrating on making the team. So with that being said lets get right down to business.
There r three things u should focus on if u want to make the team. The ability to be in control of the ball at all time when in ur possession. The ability to outrun ur opponents out there on the field. And lastly, to simply just enjoy the sport at all time. If u can not enjoy it then u wo not be able to put forth all ur efforts & ur very best. Coaches usually look for players who make things happen out there on the field. By this l mean they carefully look for individuals who possess the skills in passing (one touch pass) the speed in getting to either a pass ball or to steal one, player is ability to put pressure on their opponents, & lastly, the ability to work as a team.
To fully prepare yourself for tryout, l would work on running as it will improve ur speed & endurance; keep in mind the 45 mins. halves, dribbling skills (using small cones or something similar) & effectively trapping or stopping a ball of any height or speed. These r only the fundamentals for now. You r still young & as u play more over the years, ur skills will increase as will ur endurance & ur strength. There r many more factors that will naturally come into play as the years goes on.
Always keep in mind that all ur world class major league & pro soccer players made it there because they simply enjoyed the sport & nothing else. They play the game with all hearts. I'd like to think of it almost like having a committed relationship with soccer..these guys eats, sleep, & breathe the sport.
